Women NDA Aspirants Can take Exam in November this Year

Supreme Court NDA Exam: The Supreme Court on Wednesday passed an interim order which allows women candidates to appear for the National level exam NDA entrance exam in Nov this year and not wait till next year Entrance exam, although the Centre had told it earlier that a notification allowing women Candidates to appear for the NDA Exam would be out of May.

A division bench comprising Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Hrishikesh Roy passed the interim order in a writ petition filed seeking permission for women candidates to appear for the NDA exam. The petition wants the equal opportunity to women candidates at par with men to get admission at the prestigious NDA.

The PIL (Public Interest Litigation) raised the issue of the violation of Articles 14, 15, 16, and 19 of the Constitution by denying the opportunity to eligible and willing female candidates to join the NDA and give them a chance to train and develop the future leader in NDA in the Indian Armed Forces. Eligible and willing female candidates were being denied the opportunity to enter into NDA.

The writ claimed that this is gender discrimination as women candidates cannot apply for this examination. The court also expressed hope that today's interim order would persuade the Army to initiate that change of its own accord, rather than be forced to do so because of a directive from the judiciary.

Impact of the Decision

Now, the SC has passed an interim order allowing the interested women to appear for the National Defence Academy exam which is scheduled to be held on 14th November 2021. This is an interim order and the result will be subject to final adjudication of the petition. So, we will have to wait and see what the final order is but at least for now women candidates can appear for this examination. This is a big step towards gender equality within the forces. All the things related to the admission process, training procedure, and others will be decided by the Supreme Court or the Government of India in the near future.

This is the landmark ruling by Supreme Court to do away with gender discrimination in the National Defence Academy. This is good news to all the women candidates who want to join Armed Forces after 10+2, can give this exam now.
