US Defence secretary to visit India

The US is the next emerging defence partner of India. In the past India has imported a lot of defence equipment from the US. To make this cooperation stronger, United States Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin likely to visit India this month to further strengthen bilateral defence cooperation. His visit would be the first in-person visit by any member of President Joe Biden's administration to visit India. Austin’s visit to India is a part of his tour of a few Indo-Pacific countries.

In January, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and his counterpart Austin emphasised Washington's commitment to the Major Defense Partnership with New Delhi. The two leaders also held talks over the two countries' vision of an open and free Indo-Pacific region. The leaders of the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue (Quad) countries Japan, United States, Australia and India plan to hold a teleconference. The US President had spoken to PM Narendra Modi in February in which the White House said the leaders would work towards "a stronger regional architecture through the Quad.

The India-U.S. defence trade, which has grown significantly in a short span of time, now stands at $21 billion. The bilateral military and security ties are stronger than ever before.

In past India has signed the Logistics Exchange Memorandum of Agreement (LEMOA), Communications Compatibility and Security Agreement (COMCASA), Industrial Security Annex and the Basic Exchange and Cooperation Agreement (BECA) to facilitate military-to-military cooperation.
