India to start exporting TEJAS fighter aircraft
Recently R. Madhavan, chairman of Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, said that India is looking at Tejas exports at Rs 309 crore per aircraft. He explained that countries from Southeast Asia and the Middle East have shown interest in Tejas fighters. Further, he told the media that the trainer will cost Rs 280 crore. This is a very competitive price. Other countries have found this cost and have realised that it is the cheapest offer for a four-and-a-half generation aircraft.
As compared to the JF-17 Tejas has superior performance since it has a better engine, radar system and electronic warfare suit, besides an edge in weaponry like the Beyond Visual Range missiles. The name of the countries that have shown interest is not declared yet. HAL is setting up logistics facilities in Malaysia, Vietnam, Indonesia and Sri Lanka which will make it easier to export the aircraft.
The aircraft comes with the same airframe and engine as the Mark 1. The Mark IA is equipped with AESA radar which is from Israel, Electronic Warfare suite, there is a much better pilot machine interface. Tejas has flown more than 5000 test flights up to speeds of Mach 1.4 The aircraft’s naval prototype completed its maiden flight in April 2012. Tejas is a single-seat, single-engine, lightweight, high-agility supersonic fighter aircraft. It entered service with the Indian Air Force (IAF) in July 2016.
