Psychological tests conducted at SSB

It’s a well-known fact that to become an officer in the Indian Armed Forces, one has to get recommended by the Services Selection Board. SSB interview is a psychology-based test where the assessors judge the suitability of a candidate.

After the candidates get screened in, the psychological tests are conducted on the 2^nd day of the SSB interview. These tests are conducted to assess the sub-conscious and non-conscious state of mind.

There are 4 tests under this category.

Thematic Apperception Test (TAT)

Word Association Test (WAT)

Situation Reaction Test (SRT)

Self Description (SD)

TAT:

In this test, Candidates are shown a slide, usually hazy and black and white on a large screen for 30 seconds. In the next 4 minutes the candidates have to write a story based on that slide. The story was written should cover the following three aspects

What led to the situation?

What is currently, happening?

What will be the outcome of the situation?

After 4 minutes another slide containing a different scene will be shown. This process is repeated 11 times. Finally the 12^th the slide is a blank one. Here you have to write a story on a similar pattern without any stimulus shown to you. One is free to write whatever comes to his mind at that particular movement.

Due to time constraints the candidates don't have much time to think about the slide.

WAT

In this test, a random word is shown to the candidates. the candidates are instructed to write the very first thought that comes to their mind about that word.

The time given to write the sentence about that word is around 15 seconds. It is not necessary that you have to write a sentence, the candidates have to write the very first thought that comes to their mind. The candidates are shown 60 words in this test. It is a confirmatory test. the responses given in the previous test are confirmed through this test.

SRT

In this test, the candidates are given a booklet that contains 60 uncertain, unpredicted, and stressful situations for example “ 4 people come to loot you what will you do?”. the candidates are asked to write their responses to these situations. Candidates have to write the very first thought that comes to their mind regarding that particular situation.

Again this is also a confirmatory test. the responses given by the candidate in the very first test are confirmed through this test.

In this test, the candidate is asked 4 questions.

1-what in his opinion his think about him?

2-what in his opinion, his teachers think about him?

3-What in his opinion, his friends think about him?

4- what in his opinion he thinks about himself?

The candidate has to write in the form of a short paragraph.
