India-Maldives defence and security pacts
Recently India, Maldives signed five pacts to boost infrastructure projects in the island nation. The pacts were signed during Foreign Minister S Jaishankar’s visit. Both nations signed a defense Line of Credit agreement worth $50 million. During discussions held over days, both nations agreed to maintain peace and security in the Indian Ocean Region.
The defense Line-of-Credit will facilitate capability building in the maritime domain. The two nations agreed to strengthen coordination in enhancing regional maritime security. The defense and security collaboration will also focus on combating terrorism in all its forms and manifestations. Both the nations are to convene the first meeting of the Joint Working Group on Counter-Terrorism, countering Violent Extremism and De-radicalisation at the earliest.
An agreement to develop, support, and maintain a Maldives National Defence Force Coast Guard Harbour at Sifvaru was also signed. Indian counterpart also reviewed a number of Indian-supported projects such as the National College of Policing and Law Enforcement Studies. Both the nations are working on linkages between the police organizations to support collaboration and cooperation in training management and the exchange of trainers and trainees.
Abdulla Shahid assured Delhi of its support for permanent membership of India at the “expanded and reformed” UNSC.
