We will cover all the different types of enteries in the defence forces available for the youngsters who dream to join one of the elite organisations in the globe. One who wants to join the defence forces has myriad of options based on his/her age and educational qualification. These options comprise NDA/NA, CDS, AFCAT and many other entries which conduct direct SSB to intake future officers.
Below , we will be providing you a brief introduction of the entries as per the educational qualification. 


NDA/NA (National Defence Academy/ Naval Academy)

NDA/NA exam is conducted by UPSC twice every year. All candidates who are interested in joining Indian Army, Navy or Air Force, can appear for NDA examination. NDA exam is known as the best way to join the Indian defence forces as an officer. 

NDA exam eligibility criteria
  • Candidate must have passed 10+2 from a recognized board in India. The students appearing for 10+2 can also apply
  • Candidate must have studied Mathematics and Physics in 10+2
  • Candidate must be unmarried
  • Candidates must be physically fit
Notification of Examination: October – November & April – May

Conduct of Examination: April – May & Sept. – Oct
Type of commission- Permanent Commission
Training- National Defence Academy, khadakwasla followed by Indian Military Academy, Dehradun

Indian Army invites applications from 10+2 exam pass candidates for the Technical Entry Scheme (TES) for the Grant of Permanent Commission  twice a year.
Total No. of Vacancies: Approximately 90 Vacancies
Eligibilty-  Candidates who have passed 10+2 Examination or its equivalent with a minimum aggregate of 70% marks in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics from recognized education boards are eligible to apply for this entry.
Type of Commission: Permanent Commission

  • Pre-commissioning training at Officers Training Academy, Gaya followed by:-
  • College of Military Academy, pune
  • Military College of Telecommunication Engineering, MHOW
  • Military College of Electronics and Mechanical Engineering (MCEME). Secunderabad depending on the relevant choice of technical branch alloted.

Applications are invited from UNMARRIED MALE CANDIDATES (fulfilling the conditions of

nationality as laid down by the Govt. of India) to join the prestigious Indian Navy


  • Candidates who have appeared for JEE (Main) (for B.E./ B.Tech) exam.
  • Call up for Service Selection Board (SSB) will be issued on the basis of JEE (Main) - 2018 All India Rank.
  • Passed Senior Secondary Examination (10+2 Pattern) or its equivalent examinations from any Board recognized by Council of Boards of School Education in India (COBSE) with at least 70% aggregate marks in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics (PCM-Passing in each subject mandatory) and at least 50% marks in English (either in Class X or Class XII).

Type of Commission: Permanent Commission

Training- Indian Naval Academy, Ezhimala, Kerala for a four year degree course in engineering.

CDS (Combined Defense Services) is the common entrance exam to recruit unmarried male and female (including widows and divorcees who haven’t remarried) candidates in all the three spheres of the Indian defence services, i.e. Indian Military, Navy, and Air Force. The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) is responsibility to conduct the CDS exam at all India level.

The CDS Exam is held twice in a year in February and November for which the official notification is published in November and August respectively.

Eligibilty :-

  • Candidates applying for CDSE must be citizen of India
  • Candidates from Nepal, Bhutan and Tibetan refugee,Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka and East African Countries of Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire and Ethiopia or Vietnam are also eligible but only after subject to fulfilment eligibility criteria as the rule of Government of India.
  • Candidate must be a graduate from a recognised university
  • Candidates must be physically fit
  • Candidate must be unmarried

Type of Commission: Permanent Commission and Short Service Commission

  • Indian Military Acadeny , Dehradun for Indian Army (PC/Men)
  • Indian Naval Academy , Ezhimala for Indian Navy
  • Airforce Academy , Dundigal for Indian Airforce
  • Officers Training Academy , Chennai for Indian Army (SSC/ Men & Women )

AFCAT (Air Force Common Admission Test)

AFCAT is a national level competitive exam conducted by the Indian Air Force (IAF) to select officers for all its branches, except for the medical and dental branches. The mode of examination is online.
Eligibilty varies with branches opted by the the candidate. For detailed knowledge of the eligibilty criteria :-

TGC Entry (Technical Graduate Course)

Applications are invited from unmarried male engineering graduates for permanent commission twice a year. This is a direct entry course. There is no written examination for this course. Eligible candidates are directly called for the SSB interview. Notification is issued by Directorate General Recruiting / AG Branch in Mar/Apr and Sep/Oct.

Eligibilty :- BE / B Tech in notified streams of Engineering

Type of Commission: Permanent Commission

Training- Indian Military Academy, Dehradun

Applications are invited from unmarried Male and unmarried Female engineering graduates and also from Widows of Defence Personnel for grant of Short Service Commission in the Indian Army in all Arms/Services ,notified by Directorate General Recruiting / AG Branch twice a year in Jun / Jul and Dec/Jan. This is also a direct entry which means there is no written examination and the only thing matters is your calibre to clear SSB. 

Eligibility : Engineering Degree in notified stream

Type of Commission:  Short Service Commission 

Training- Officers Training Academy, Chennai 

ACC Entry (Army Cadet College)

It is one of the entries which focus on the upliftment of soldiers already serving the country as a NCO. This entry provides an opportunity to become an officer in indian army directly from a soldier rank. It is notified by MP Directorate / AGs Br through Units in Mar and Aug. It is also conducted twice a year. 

Eligibility :-

  • 10+2 Pattern Class 12th pass or Equivalent. Should have qualified ACC written test.
  • 20 to 27 years , minimum service two years can apply

Training- Indian Military Academy, Dehradun

SCO Entry (Special Commissioned Officers)

Under Special Commissioned Officers SCO entry JCOs/NCOs/OR in the age group of 28-35 years, with a Senior School Certificate Pass (Class 10+2 pattern) qualification, are eligible for Permanent commission after screening by SSB and Medical Board. Conducted twice a year.This entry is  notified by MP Directorate / AGs Br through Units in Apr and Jul.

Eligibility :-Matric with One Year Diploma or Above.

Between 30 to 35 years. minimum service of five years can apply
Type of Commission: Permanent Commission
Training-  AEC Centre & College, Pachmarhi followed by OTA, Gaya
AEC Education Instructor (Army Education Corps)

Applications are invited from eligible male candidates for recruitment as Havildar. Education in Science and Arts streams in the Army Educational Corps of Indian Army.

Eligibility :-
The candidate must have a working knowledge of either English or Hindi or both. Candidate should have graduation / post-graduation degree from a recognised university.

Science Stream. B Sc / B Sc(IT) / BCA / BE / B Tech / M Sc / M
Sc(IT) / MCA / M Tech (with or without B Ed) with any of the following subjects:-
(aa) Physics (ae) Botany
(ab) Chemistry (af) Zoology
(ac) Mathematics (ag) Electronics
(ad) Biology (ah) Computer Science

Arts Stream. BA / MA (with or without B Ed) with any of the following subjects:-
(aa) English Literature, Political Science

(ae) Geography, Sociology

  1. Sir i have a pg degree in with 60 % above and a graduate from 48 % and i am a commerce student can i apply for a direct entry in defence (without written direct interview) of cds .
