Military Creed: IMA Whiskey !!!

The Indian Military Academy, Dehradun (also known as IMA) is the officer training Academy of the Indian Army. IMA was established in 1932.

A trainee on admission to the IMA is referred to as a Gentleman Cadet. One reason for this is that the academy expects its graduates to uphold the highest moral and ethical values.

No GC gets preferential treatment, all are allowed to shape up together; together they break bread, together they play and together they receive the same kind of training. This bonding helps them to develop values such as camaraderie, espirit de corps and oneness that go a long way to give a separate identity to the corps of officers in the Army.

What Is IMA Whiskey?

Apart from the rigorous training and a great deal of values, a lot of fascinating things are also learnt in the Academy.

As obvious as it sounds, IMA Whiskey is ‘definitely not’ an alcoholic beverage or any drink. IMA Whiskey is, in fact, a training exercise drill cadets need to practice.

After intense training that goes on for hours, when the cadets are exhausted to even move a muscle, that’s when the IMA Whiskey begins.

The Indian Military Whiskey exercise involves the cadets to put their fingers down on the ground and move around it for about 20 times. The spinning around the finger makes the cadets feel Dizzy and unsteady. The sensation of head spin becomes quite similar to that one gets after a hangover, now the name makes sense right?

This drill is usually taken into practice during boxing sessions. Once done with IMA Whiskey, the Gentlemen Cadets are instructed to start punching bag 20 times at a speed as fast as possible with every bit of stamina that remains. The same cycle of 20 circles and 20 punches go hand in hand, again and again.

What is the Logic?

Now, you all must be confused why the instructors make them do such regime. This is done because in lethal or non-lethal confrontation when an enemy hits you, you get all dizzy when that first punch lands on your head.

Now, the enemy after hitting you first might think that he has knocked you out but suddenly you just come out with 20 faster and stronger punches, leaving the enemy knocked off completely because this has become your Muscle Memory. And muscle memory is the ability to reproduce a particular movement without conscious thought, acquired as a result of frequent repetition of that movement. And it is the Whiskey exercise that gives you thy high, you can't get anywhere else !!

Inscribed in the oak paneling at the Eastern entrance of the Chetwode Hall is the Academy’s credo, cited from the speech of Field Marshal Chetwode at the inauguration of the academy in 1932 —

The safety, honour and welfare of your country come first, always and every time. The honour, welfare and comfort of the men you command come next.Your own ease, comfort and safety come last, always and every time.Only a few Survive the brutal Training the Academy Offers.
