Ranks and Insignia of Indian Armed Forces: Indian Air Force


The profession in Indian Armed Forces is a unique vocation of experts who are entrusted to defend the Constitution and the rights and interests of India. More than an indication of pay grade, The ranks provide a system of leadership that indicates a Soldier's level of expertise, responsibility and authority inside that profession. Regardless of rank, every Soldier has a significant role in the force.

As they say in Indian armed forces " You wear your heart on your sleeve and your resume on your uniform". Rank defines a soldier while Insignia is a distinguishing mark and a badge of authority or honor. Each wing of the Indian Armed Forces has a specific insignia , In this article we will discuss the rank and insignia of Indian Air Force.

Ranks and Insignia are discussed in decreasing order of priority below.

COMMISSIONED OFFICER

MARSHAL OF THE IAF
Marshal of the air force is the English term for the most senior rank in a number of air forces. The ranks described by this term can properly be considered marshal ranks. Marshal of the Indian Air Force Arjan Singh, DFC, Padma Vibhushan awardee (born 15 Apr 1919 as Arjan Singh Aulakh) is the only officer of the Indian Air Force to be promoted to five-star rank, equal to a Field Marshal, to which he was promoted in 2002. There is no retirement age for this rank.

AIR CHIEF MARSHAL
Also known as Chief of the Air staff , He is the professional head and the commander of the Indian Air Force.The position is abbreviated as CAS in the Indian Air Force cables and communication, and is usually held by a four-star air officer of the rank Air Chief Marshal. It is a four star rank in indian airfoce.
Current CAS- Air Chief Marshal Birender Singh Dhanoa 
Term length- 3 years or at the age of 62, whichever is earlier.

AIR MARSHAL
This rank is held by the officers who hold very senior appointments of the formation. It is a three-star rank in the Indian Air Force.

AIR VICE MARSHAL
Air vice-marshal (AVM) is a two-star air officer rank which originated in and continues to be used by the Royal Air Force.The rank is also used by the air forces of many countries which have historical British influence and it is sometimes used as the English translation of an equivalent rank in countries which have a non-English air force-specific rank structure.

AIR COMMODORE
Air commodore (abbreviated as Air Cdre in the IAF) is a one-star rank and the most junior general rank of the air-officer which originated in and continues to be used by the Royal Air Force.

GROUP CAPTAIN
It is usually abbreviated Gp Capt. While the rank originated in the British Royal Air Force (RAF),group captain is a rank used by the air forces of many Commonwealth and other countries that have been influenced by British military culture. It is sometimes used as the English translation of an equivalent rank in countries which have a non-English air force-specific rank structure.

WING COMMANDER
It is a commissioned rank equivalent to Lieutenant Colonel in army and commander in indian navy

SQUADRON LEADER
.Squadron leader (Sqn Ldr in the IAF) is a commissioned rank in the Royal Air Force and the air forces of many countries which have historical British influence. It is also sometimes used as the English translation of an equivalent rank in countries which have a non-English air force-specific rank structure.

FLIGHT LIEUTENANT
Flight Lieutenant (Flt Lt in the RAF and IAF) is a commissioned air force rank that originated in the Royal Naval Air Service and is still used in the Royal Air Force and many other countries, especially in the Commonwealth. It is also sometimes used as the English translation of an equivalent rank in non-English-speaking countries, especially those with an air force-specific rank structure


FLYING OFFICER
It is rank achieved after getting commissioned into the force from the academy. Flying officer (Fg Off in the IAF) is a junior commissioned rank in the Royal Air Force and the air forces of many countries which have historical British influence.

JUNIOR COMMISIONED OFFICER

MASTER WARRANT OFFICER
This is the rank in which an officer is designated by warrant, unlike commissioned officers who get designated as an officer by a commission. It is the highest rank in Junior commissioned officers.

WARRANT OFFICER
A warrant officer is a Senior Non Commissioned Officer(SNCO) and a senior Air warrior(airman). Warrant officer is part of warranted ranks which consists of Junior warrant officer who gets promoted to Warrant officer and then to Master warrant officer. A warrant officer's role depends on his trade.

JUNIOR WARRANT OFFICER
Junior warrant officer rank is below the warrant officer and this rank is equivalent to Naib subedar in Indian Army.

NON COMMISSIONED OFFICER

SEARGENT 
Sergeant in Indian Air Force is a non-comissioned rank and also called Senior Non Comissioned Officer, in short SNCO.

CORPORAL
This rank given to an airman who is senior to leading aircraftsman but junior to a sergeant. A corporal is designated as a Non-Commissioned Officer in the IAF.

LEADING AIRCRAFTMAN
Leading aircraftman (LAC) or leading aircraftwoman (LACW) is a junior rank in IAF, between aircraftman and senior aircraftman and having a NATO rank code of OR-2.

AIRCRAFTMAN
This is the juniormost rank in Airforce and is equivalent to sipahi in army.
