Types of Commission In Armed Forces: Short Service Commission


Joining defence services is a dream for many youngsters who wish to serve their country. It’s all about honour, sacrifice and courage. Being part of the country’s defence forces is not really a job, but a way of life. This is why thousands of aspirants with an adventurous streak and reverence for their motherland aspire to join the forces. There are two kinds of entries in the Indian Armed Forces viz. Permanent Commission (PC) and Short Service Commission (SSC) for Men and Women. Here we have focused on the opportunities available for an aspirant in Short Service Commission. 

Short Service Commission

Short service commission (SSC) provides you the opportunity to serve the nation for 10/14 years. You will be enrolled for a tenure of 10 years. After 10 years of service, there are 3 options:-
1. Elect for permanent commission
2. Opt for 4 years extension (can resign at any time during this period of 4 yrs extension.)
3. opt out

Short service commission nourishes your skill set in analytical thinking, planning skills, man management , fleet management and many more the defence services provide you diverse career options. Qualities which will make you an invaluable asset for any organization that you join after the services and there are opportunities to side step to an alternate career.

For Indian Army 

1. For enrollment in Officers Training Academy (OTA) , Chennai

Short Service Commission (Non Technical) Men & Women- Direct entry based on SSB interview.
Short Service Commission (Technical) Men & Women-Direct entry based on SSB interview.
Short Service Commission (NCC) Men & Women-Direct entry based on SSB interview.
Short Service Commission (JAG) Men & Women-Direct entry based on SSB interview.
CDS entry(For men and women)Exam followed by SSB interview


For Indian Airforce

1. For enrollment in Airforce Academy, Dundigul
AFCAT entry(For men and women)- Exam followed by SSB interview
Ground duty (Technical Branch)- For both men and women. It is a direct entry based on SSB.
Ground duty (Non Technical Branch)- For both men and women. It is a direct entry based on SSB.
As a Graduate/Post Graduate you can join as an officer in any of the following Ground Duty (Non-technical) Branches.

ADMINISTRATION BRANCH
ACCOUNTS BRANCH
LOGISTICS BRANCH
EDUCATION BRANCH
METEOROLOGY BRANCH

For Indian Navy

1. For enrollment in The Naval Academy, Ezhimala
